The past several weeks I’ve been discussing the things Original Medicare (Parts A & B) does not cover, like dental, vision and hearing. This week I am flipping the coin and discussing something that is covered by Original Medicare. Hospice care.
Hospice care is covered under Medicare Part A, while Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part C does not technically cover hospice care. DO NOT FEAR if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, hospice care is still covered under Medicare Part A.
What is Hospice Care?
It is the care provided for those who are terminally ill. Both my mom and my dad where in hospice care. It’s an emotionally challenging time, but thank God there are professionals available to help throughout this process. Mom’s hospice care was in her home, while dad’s care was in a facility. Both are covered by Medicare Part A. I also visited a cousin in a hospice care facility. The professionals tending to all three of my family members were caring and compassionate. They understood the gravity of each situation.
What rules do I have to follow to get Coverage from Medicare?
First, two (NOT ONE) doctors must give a diagnosis of being terminally ill. In most cases it would be a hospice care doctor and a primary care physician.
Second, this terminal illness leads to a life expectancy of less than six months. IE, you can’t be in hospice care for years. I know, what if someone rebounds while in hospice care? It could happen, but honestly that is rare.
And third, hospice care must be provided by a facility or organization that is approved by Medicare. Those who provide this level of care are highly trained and there are no substitutes for them.
What does hospice care cover?
The list is extensive, so I’ll try to make it brief.
- Doctor services and nursing care – drugs to help with pain management
- Health aide and homemaker services – Medical equipment and supplies
- Physical, occupational and speech therapy – respite care for caregivers
- Short-term inpatient care – Social worker services
- Spiritual/grief counseling for family members – dietary counseling
If you are dealing with a loved one who is in this final stage of life, my heart goes out to you. I sat by my mom’s bedside for several days as she passed. When they carried her out of the house, I cried for a couple of days and found myself getting emotional for years after that. I know it is hard, but you can be confident that Original Medicare Part A covers hospice care.
